I need to know, as I am interested in this. also, does anyone know if I would have to become a neurologist first?
Neurologists are only one of the many kinds of players in this field. Whether you need to become one depends on what you want to do. See the first reference for a good idea of what goes on in the field. Pulmonologists treat those sleep disorders related to breathing. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselors treat those related to emotional difficulties and disorders. A patient with a sleep disorder would likely first consult a diagnostician to help figure out which of many possible causes is the likely culprit. For some, it’s as simple as not drinking coffee after 4pm.
The overall field is sleep medicine. Part of neurology is one part of that field.

Dear my friends,
I would like to know about CPAP Device in medicine. And I have some question about it.
What is application of this device and how works it?
What parameters are important for it?
I am very thank you for your early reply.
CPAP is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine is a device that delivers air at a constant elevated pressure to your airways usually during hours of sleep. It usually uses face masks or nasal prongs to deliver the air.
The most usual need for this is for a person who has OSA or obstructive sleep apnea
How does it work- well people with sleep apnea particularly the type that results from obesity loose airway muscle tone in deep sleep and this causes the airways to shut down and the oxygen saturaton in the blood to drop dangerously… the CPAP machine allows increased air pressure to be delivered to prevent these episodes.
Parameters? The settings are decided by an MD certified in sleep medicine (usually a pulmonologist or a neurologist) during a CPAP titration study. It takes into consideration several issues …how you tolerate different masks..if you need supplimental Oxygen or not etc. It is a very specialised field and you should follow recommendations form your sleep MD.
