Sleep paralysis: What causes it, and how do i get rid of it?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

I get sleep paralysis at least 4 times a week, and have been experiencing it for the past 4years. It is beginning to concern me because sometimes i find myself "paralyzed" while somehow facing down in my pillow. it feels as im about to suffocate. each time i snap out of it right before the last minute.

anyone have similar experiences?? what causes this, and how do i get rid of it???

Is it harmful?

Sleep paralysis is most often associated with narcolepsy, a neurological condition in which the person has uncontrollable naps. However, there are many people who experience sleep paralysis without having signs of narcolepsy. Sometimes it runs in families. There is no known explanation why some people experience this paralysis. It is not harmful, although most people report feeling very afraid because they do not know what is happening, and within minutes they gradually or abruptly are able to move again; the episode is often terminated by a sound or a touch on the body.

In some cases, when hypnogogic hallucinations are present, people feel that someone is in the room with them, some experience the feeling that someone or something is sitting on their chest and they feel impending death and suffocation. That has been called the “Hag Phenomena” and has been happening to people over the centuries. These things cause people much anxiety and terror, but there is no physical harm.

What else can you tell me about sleep paralysis?

Some people with disrupted sleep schedules or circadian rhythm disturbances experience sleep paralysis
A study found that 35% of subjects with isolated sleep paralysis also reported a history of wake panic attacks unrelated to the experience of paralysis
Sixteen percent of these persons with isolated sleep paralysis met the criteria for panic disorder
How can I stop the sleep paralysis?

In severe cases, where episodes take place at least once a week for 6 months, medication may be used.

You may be able to minimize the episodes by following good sleep hygiene:

getting enough sleep
reduce stress
exercise regularly (but not too close to bedtime)
keep a regular sleep schedule

why do some depression sufferers experience insomnia while others experience hypersomnia?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

What are some of the psychological reasons why one person suffering depression might sleep constantly and another experience acute insomnia?

I cant say for sure, but the first thought that came to mind is that everyones body chemistry is different and that may be why.

Personally, I went thru years of insomnia until I found Ambien. Thank the good Lord for Ambien.

Sleep Paralysis: Don’t be afraid!

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

This is a short, poorly edited video response for anyone “suffering” from sleep paralysis. I feel I know quite a bit about SP (its history, common “symptoms,” techniques for avoiding it, techniques for making it more common, its ociation with lucid dreaming and out of body experiences, as well as techniques for moving from sleep paralysis to out of body experiences and lucid dreams). I started to make a video thoroughly explaining all of this, but realized it was going to be extremely long and possibly for nothing. Didn’t want to spend my time if it wasn’t worth it. Anyway, if you are interested in knowing more, you are welcome to ask. I don’t know everything, but I know how the experiences work with myself and many others. Background music by Woven from the album “Designer Codes” for sale on itunes. Worth every cent and then some!

What are the current drugs for cataplexy and mild Narcolepsy?

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

I’ve had mild narcolepsy and cataplexy. I manage it w/o drugs, mostly, with naps and sometimes a good night’s sleep. In the beginning I took some antidepressants against the cataplexy and a stimulant against the daytime sleepiness, but quit when I started having babies. Now, three years later, I’m finished nursing my children and will look into something to help the daytime sleepiness in the afternoons (driving, etc.)

What’s out there now for cataplexy. I hated taking antidepressants and would rather not start them again. Any advice?

Sarina
I have heard about Xyrem. Any experience with that or other drugs from those who know about narcolepsy and have experience with the current drugs would be much appreciated.

Don’t take medication geared towards mental health issues lightly. You really should be asking a professional. And if you don’t trust the answer, seek a second opinion from another professional. Many of these drugs are addictive or they have very serious side effects. No matter what you decide to do, you need to have a professional observing the effects the drug has on your brain and your body. The people answering your question on this site, cannot make these observations even if they know what they are talking about (don’t take that for granted). TALK TO A PROFESSIONAL!!!

How can I go into sleep paralysis?

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

I had sleep paralysis twice in my life, I really liked the experience. It was a bit scary the first time.

Are there ways to induce sleep paralysis?

Thanks.

You are much more likely to experience sleep paralysis while sleeping on your back.

Is it bad to experience sleep paralysis every night?

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

I have been experiencing sleep paralysis every night for the past few months and it’s really getting freaken annoying haha. Should I get it checked with a doctor?

I’ve been experiecing sleep paralysis like uh the day befor yesterday and the day before that. Its really terrifying. I just actually asked a question about it look at my profile for the lastest question I have and check for the best answer.

if one’s cpap (for sleep apnea) setting is too high, what symptoms will they notice?

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

don’t just say go to the doctor as he was wrong and I wore cpap for 3 years and they later found after years of my insisting the results from the sleep study were not right (as I only slept a half hour due to them testing me when I normally was awake (I havedelayed sleep phase syndrome and am up in daytime) and finally convincing them to repeat it when I normally slept) they found that for three years I was getting almost NO rem sleep or stage three or four restorative sleep and the setting was way too low and although I looked like I was sleeping had essentially no benefits from sleep and still had all symptoms of sleep apnea..so I don’t trust them..even after they upped setting– still no benefits I can detect except no morning headaches

Now I have a new machine that can be set higher and want to know HOW can I tell if it is TOO high. The tecnicians said I’d have chest pains and not be able to sleep or fall asleep..anything else or more details on this is what I m seeking. Thanks

At higher than optimal pressures, many things can occur. Such as, headaches, pain in the throat or sinuses, pain in the chest and lungs, aerophagia, bleeding ears, bleeding nose, and the irritation that comes from difficulty in exhaling comfortably.

At lower than optimal pressures you may experience daytime sleepiness, wake up feeling unrefreshed, snoring, untreated apnea.
hope you soon feel better!

Can you Astral project without having sleep paralysis?

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Although i haven’t projected fully, i’ve had it to the point where i heard vibrations and voices and i could see everything around me at once which confused the hell out of me, in which every time i was 100% conscious.

But every time i have had any of these they only happend when i had sleep sleep paralysis and relaxed and focused on leaving my body.

Do people meditate to get into this state of a conscious mind and asleep body in order to astral project?

Thanks for the replies, any tips / information is appreaciated.

You do not need to experience sleep paralysis to experience astral projection. You can use binaural beats music to assist your experience (one option): http://popmagick.com/binaural/astral-projection.html

Another good option is to use Tattva cards: http://www.magicalpath.net/tattva/tattva-vision.html

Meditation is often recommended to complement spiritual development of any type. There are some good tips from the related field of Remote viewing at this address: http://web.archive.org/web/20060702112310/www.magicalpath.net/annexia/the_course_for_galactic_diplomats.html
