What could I use as a visual aid for my project on narcolepsy?

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

The visual aid isn’t to show what the disease does but to show exactly how it works all the way down to the nerves and cells. All i know about how it works is that the decrease in production of hypocretin (hormone that pretty much keeps us awake) causes the people to become very tired at odd hours of the day. I know that probably not many people will have answers but any of them would definitely help.

A poster would probably be a back up if you don’t have anything else in mind but maybe a video on somebody effected by the disorder… sorry I can’t think of anything else

Can there be an association between insomnia and split-personalities?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

In the book and movie "Fight Club", the main character develops a split personality seemingly because of his insomnia. Is this a realistic effect of insomnia? Have there been any documented cases? Please supply documentation, if possible.

Insomnia does not cause split personality disorder, but can be a symptom of the disease, it may also be a symptom of bipolar disorder. but these disorders are not caused by insomnia, insomnia can be caused by them. Insomnia though in long term cases can cause personality changes due to lack of REM sleep which is needed for the brain to get rid of excess energy, when it has no release it starts to deteriorate fast.

Does anyone have Narcolepsy and an autoimmune disease?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

I’ve read that it’s believed Narcolepsy might be an autoimmune disease. I can’t find much new information on it, but wondered if there was anyone out there that had narcolepsy and an autoimmune disease?
I have narcolepsy without cataplexy and have developed a connective tissue disease so I’m looking for others with a possible link, or at least other information to see how likely they are related. I saw information about the relation prior to my autoimmune disease diagnosis (MCTD). Just looking into it more. Thanks for the information and sharing your conditions with me!

Yeah, I’ve got narcolepsy and an immunoglobulin deficiency (IgG).

How to keep my housemates from being bothered by my snoring?

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

I have a loud snore partially because I’m overweight. I live in my own room. There are seven rooms for seven people (The owner has a special permit). I’m worried that my snoring will bother other people especially the people next to me. The walls between the rooms aren’t thick. Any suggestions?

Have you tried Breathe-Right strips?

If you have medical insurance, have you discussed this with your doctor? You may actually have a medical condition known as sleep apnea, which can be controlled by wearing a special mask-like device while you sleep. If you have sleep apnea and let it go untreated, you are at great risk of developing heart disease and possibly even sudden death.

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)

Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian

On Monday, November 6, 2006 at 2 PM EST, Join experts from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian for a webcast discussion about CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). These experts will review aspects of the procedure, take questions from participants and discuss opportunities for working with your hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Units to share best practices.

Bubble CPAP or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure is a low-tech, labor-intensive therapy performed on newborns with Respiratory Distress Syndrome to prevent Chronic Lung Disease. Pressurized oxygen is delivered through prongs in the baby’s nose allowing continuous lung inflation. With Bubble CPAP, babies breathe with istance as opposed to a machine breathing for them. Bubble CPAP is a non-invasive technique unlike alternatives (i.e. surfactant and ventilators, both require intubation.)
