What causes snoring and how can it be stopped?

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

My boyfriend recently started snoring a lot. It seems like it only happened when he sleeps on his back, but its getting to the point to where he keeps me up at night. I’m wondering what causes snoring. I would also like to know if anyone has any home remedies that might reduce it (and if you don’t, just let me know what medications, nose strips, etc worked for you).

Snoring is caused by relaxed tissue vibrating. Some people who snore a lot have sleep apnea, some people do not. Many people who have sleep apnea snore, but some do not.

Since he is waking you up at night, watch him for awhile while he is snoring. Does he appear to stop breathing? Does he have to start to wake himself in order to start breathing again? If he does, then there is a good chance he may have sleep apnea. If he doesn’t stop breathing, he likely does not have sleep apnea. If you suspect sleep apnea, he needs a sleep study. Other signs of sleep apnea are having difficulty waking up in the morning (not feeling refreshed from a night’s sleep), waking up with a headache, and having trouble staying awake during the day (expecially if he has to be inactive such as sitting in a meeting, reading, watching tv).

Obstructive sleep apnea has many causes and many treatments. One cause is being over weight. Another is a deviated septum. Another is badly congested sinuses. Another is having too much tissue in the soft palate. CPAP and BiPAP are treatments that can be used for almost any form of obstructive sleep apnea. Weight loss is a treatment for sleep apnea due to being over weight. Seriously congested sinuses are treated either with antibiotics or surgery (depends upon just how bad it is.) Deviated septum is treated with a septoplasty (surgery). Having too much tissue in the soft palate is treated by a UPPP (surgery). A person can have more than one of these conditions at the same time. Only an ENT is qualified to do many of these treatments.

There is also central sleep apnea. It has to do with the brain forgetting to tell a person to breathe. It can be treated as well.

If you suspect that your boyfriend has sleep apnea, he needs a special sleep test done.

If he doesn’t have any symptoms of sleep apnea, there are some over the counter remedies to try. If it seems that it his nose is the source is the cause of the problem, there are those little strips you can buy that are supposed to help hold the nose open. There is also a spray for the throat that is supposed to help stop snoring.

Since he only does it when he sleeps on his back, he may need to sleep on his side. There are pillows that are supposed to help you sleep on your side.

How do I find the right doctor for my anxiety and insomnia?

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

I have to find a doctor that accepts my insurance (Humana HMO) and will help me with my anxiety and insomnia. I tried going to the website and picking a doctor at random, and he was horrible, he didn’t help at all. I don’t have time to go doctor shopping, but my symptoms are getting out of control.

Take a vacation , go to the beach , take a mental day off , meditate , get delta wave cds for relaxation , practice breathing techniqes …before bed

What are some symptoms of sleep apnea?

You need to have someone to observe you sleeping, else you won’t know what to report to the MD. You will notice feeling more tired do to the lack of uninterrupted sleep, sore dry throat, due to mouth breathing and snoring, caused by the tissues in the back of your throat collapsing and obstructing your airway. There are 2 types of sleep apnea syndromes.",Obstructive" caused by a blockage in the throat or upper airway."Central sleep apnea" is caused by a dysfunction in part of the brain that controls breathing, allows low levels of oxygen or high levels of carbon dioxide to build up in the blood, allowing the reduced sensitivity to cause the disruption of normal breathing patterns. The only way to find out for sure is to your MD to perform a "sleep study" in a sleep lab with a qualified specialist . Take care. SW RNP.

Do I have sleep apnea based on these symptoms?

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Sometimes I will wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air. Other times I will be lying in bed and have trouble breathing through my nose which will create pressure in my head. Also sometimes a part of my body will twitch usually my legs, The only thing that helps is if i sit up or stand up but when I lay down these symptoms will occur.
I am 6 ft. 135 lbs. If anything I am underweight.

It’s possible. Any kind of respiratory distress definitely something to check out with your doctor. They can order a sleep study. People can die from sleep apnea. But if dxed, a CPAP or BIPAP will fix you right up.
Some symptoms for sleep apnea:
Daytime sleepiness
snoring more than 3 nights per week
snoring loudly
witnessed periods of no breath sounds or breathing
male neck size over 18, female neck size over 16
obesity
high blood pressure

Good luck and God bless

I am not sure what is the cause of my constant fatigue.

The biggest symptom of Sleep Apnea is fatigue. If you sleep with a partner, has that person even noticed you not breathing. My wife noticed me stop breathing and that was when I had a sleep study and got diagnosed. I’m now on CPAP treatment and feel 1000% better.

What exactly is sleep diagnostics and cpap titration?

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

I was wondering if anyone could tell me exactly what it is, the process of it, and the after results. I went to see a doctor today to consult about weight loss and I had to do some questionnaire. The doctor told me about doing surgery, which I forgot what it was called. But he also told me in order to get my surgery started, I had to do some sleep diagnostics and cpap titration. I was in a rush so I didn’t get to ask many questions. If anyone could help and if anyone’s experienced this, please inform about this process. Thanks.

CPAP is a type of therapy, where an oxygen mask is hooked up to you while you sleep, to keep your airways open. It is used primarily for sleep apnea, a syndrome in which you stop breathing throughout the night. It places extreme stress on your heart and circulatory system and can cause heart failure, CPAP corrects this.

Titration means to adjust a dose of something until the desired effects are achieved. In this case, I’ll assume the doc is talking about adjusting the dosage of an oxygen mixture to help keep your blood’s oxygen saturation at a normal level.

Sleep diagnostics probably means you will go to a sleep lab, and stay overnight so they can monitor your vital signs and observe any abnormalities in your sleep/breathing patterns. They’ll likely do the CPAP titration there, to ensure you are getting the full benefits of the CPAP therapy.
