Can anyone help me find a documentary on narcolepsy?

Friday, September 25th, 2009

In the UK a few years ago, there was a documentary about narcolepsy (the uncontrollable compulsion to fall asleep). For my psychology project part of it is to do with narcolepsy, and I would like to see this documentary again, but I don’t know where to find it. Can someone help me out?

Thank you

The documentary was called "Living Nightmare", aired in 2003. The link to the BBC site about the documentary as well as the link to the transcript are listed below.

Does anyone have Narcolepsy and an autoimmune disease?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

I’ve read that it’s believed Narcolepsy might be an autoimmune disease. I can’t find much new information on it, but wondered if there was anyone out there that had narcolepsy and an autoimmune disease?
I have narcolepsy without cataplexy and have developed a connective tissue disease so I’m looking for others with a possible link, or at least other information to see how likely they are related. I saw information about the relation prior to my autoimmune disease diagnosis (MCTD). Just looking into it more. Thanks for the information and sharing your conditions with me!

Yeah, I’ve got narcolepsy and an immunoglobulin deficiency (IgG).

Griffonex 5-HTP, 90 Capsules, Health Concerns

Griffonex 5-HTP is a safe way to boost serotonin levels. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter useful for proper brain function. It also increases melatonin and endorphin levels. Therapeutic Actions: Depression, insomnia, headaches, fibromyalgia, PMS, bulimia Use as an adjunct for weight loss especially to reduce carbohydrate cravings Experimentally used for narcolepsy, seizure disorders Serotonin deficiency has been implicated in anxiety, depression, food cravings, insomnia, headaches, muscle and joint pain, exhaustion, panic disorders, bulimia, PMS and hyperactivity. Clinical studies in Europe and Japan have exhibited equal result to pharmaceutical antidepressants. For best results it should be combined with exercise, stress reduction strategies, and counseling. In clinical studies, 5HTP has been used in dosages up to 300 mg TID, to reduce carbohydrate cravings. Subjects taking it twenty minutes before meals curbed their intake of calories (1100) despite being able to eat as they normally would. Therefore 5HTP helped to improve satiety. In another study where subjects were reducing their calories (1200 calories diet) lost almost one lb. per week; the placebo group lost 2 pounds in 12 weeks. According to research conducted at Stanford University, 5HTP significantly increased REM sleep. This may be particularly relevant to seniors, chronic pain patients, and those withdrawing from drugs and alcohol, all implicated in poor REM sleep. Double blind studies have demonstrated an improvement in muscle pain and sleep disturbance in fibromyalgia patients. At the University of Milan, 77.4 percent to 93.5 percent of people with chronic headaches improved with the administration of 5HTP for two months or longer. Other headache triggers are food intolerance, alcohol especially red wine, chemicals, pharmaceutical and recreational drugs, stress, hormonal changes, eyestrain, fatigue, muscle tension, and weather changes. Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

I have a 11 yr old who has narcolepsy and epilepsy. durring the summer we go and have 3 or 4 attacks a week. well when school starts the attacks go to 3 or 4 a day. She takes 2 naps at school, but the wake her up from them. any advice??

I have also notice that is she dont eay meals and snacks she has spells. does this affect it?

She can go from being a bouncing off the wall 11 yr old, to a 11 yr having to be pushed in a wheel chair. because she is so weak.

I have researched, asked, and the drs are trying to adjust meds. now. does anyone know anything that can help us, be half way normal???

Yes, stressful situations can cause narcolepsy attacks. Talk to your doctor about it as he/she may want to adjust the meds.

Living with Narcolepsy

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Damien is a 21 year old narcoleptic who lives in York with his parents, who run an old fashioned guest house. His unusual condition has had a devastating impact on all of their lives. He often finds many of the things that we take for granted a real struggle: paying attention, learning, getting and keeping a job, communicating, sleeping (ironically).

Can someone suffer from insomnia and narcolepsy?

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Remember, there are different types of narcolepsy. It’s not just where you fall asleep when you are walking around. Please only reply if you know what you are talking about or suffer from one of these conditions because I am truly interested in the answer.
