What is insomnia? Is it like sleeplessness, or is it worse? Where can I find information about insomnia and sleeplessness?

Insomnia

is a symptom of a sleeping disorder characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep despite the opportunity. Insomnia is a symptom, not a stand-alone diagnosis or a disease. By definition, insomnia is "difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or both" and it may be due to inadequate quality or quantity of sleep. It is typically followed by functional impairment while awake. Insomniacs have been known to complain about being unable to close their eyes or "rest their mind" for more than a few minutes at a time. Both organic and non-organic insomnia constitute a sleep disorder.

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

For the past while, I’ve been having really bad insomnia. I have work at 9:00AM and I go to bed at 8:30PM because I know that I probably wont get much sleep, I fall asleep at 8 and usually wake up by 1-2AM and cant fall back asleep. Sleeping pills can be addictive, so I was wondering, is there any other way to beat insomnia other than using sleeping pills?

Can there be an association between insomnia and split-personalities?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

In the book and movie "Fight Club", the main character develops a split personality seemingly because of his insomnia. Is this a realistic effect of insomnia? Have there been any documented cases? Please supply documentation, if possible.

Insomnia does not cause split personality disorder, but can be a symptom of the disease, it may also be a symptom of bipolar disorder. but these disorders are not caused by insomnia, insomnia can be caused by them. Insomnia though in long term cases can cause personality changes due to lack of REM sleep which is needed for the brain to get rid of excess energy, when it has no release it starts to deteriorate fast.
