Will a cpap machine improve the health of someone with sleep apnea?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I have sleep apnea and am scheduled to pick up a cpap machine this week. I found them to be uncomfortable when I spent the night at the sleep clinic but I’m going to give it a try. My sleep apnea is moderate to severe so I’ve got to try something to improve my condition. I’ve heard several people say they hadn’t slept so well in years after going on the cpap. Can anyone out there give me a review? If they are bothersome at first can you eventually get used to them?

It takes about 2 weeks to get use to the machine. They are wonderful once you get use to them, I promise you! I hated mine at first! But my wife wanted me to live! I swear that it made me feel 20 years younger ( i am 61). I fought against it at first! But it is the best thing that has ever happened to me, I only wish I hadden’t been such a hard headed sonofwhaterver in resisting to go to the sleep lab in the first place!

Give it time you will really feel better! Try different face pieces including the type that just fit in your nose only … try it out and use a chin strap to keep your mouth closed. It keeps your face free!

Good luck stay with it!

How do you cure/treat this WORST narcolepsy?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

narcolepsy (excessive daytime sleepiness) with hypnogogic hallucinations

that or at least i sleep for short periods of time even at midday without knowing it (coz of hypnogogic hallucinations)

plus, i sleeptalk everytime i sleep, so i do it at day too, and i seem stupid and idiotic when other people are around, they’re just suddenly gonna hear me say stuff everytime the narcolepsy-sleeptalking combo happens
pls answer seriously

Here is a different response, which you may occasionally find useful. I cannot answer your question as asked.

You could use a timer, an alarm clock or the timer in a mobile phone to waken you at a certain time. It may be even possible to put the phone on vibration only.

Does anyone know from experience whether or not 5-HTP helps with sleep disorders?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I have chronic insomnia. It started probably 8 years ago. On an initial appointment with a new OBGYN, my doctor asked if I was on the pill. I answered yes, and he advised me to go off of it because over time, the pill interferes with serotonin levels. I did that, and in a week was sleeping like a baby. Then, over the course of time, my sleeping problems came back. It has been years on and off of sleep aids. I have tried Valerian root, melatonin, tylenol pm, and of course the prescription stuff, but then I end up a zombie the next day. I read about 5-htp and was wondering whether or not this might be a solution.

your last statement is your answer, there is no guarantee, this product is not better than the ones you are describing though. on the other hand, if you have gone through so much then it is worth a try, good luck

How do you know if you have Sleep Apnea ?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I was wondering if anyone on here has sleep apnea and how do you feel when you have it ? The reason I ask is because I was wondering if I had sleep apnea a perfect example is: There are times when I will wake up gasping and choking and continuous coughing and my throat feels a bit rare and sore. Are these some symptoms for people with Sleep Apnea?

Common symptoms of sleep apnea;
Snoring
waking up often
weight gain
feeling tired most of the time
gasping/choking (which means your breathing stopped momentarily)
falling asleep involuntarily during the day

more severe symptoms of sleep apnea;
falling asleep while driving
waking up needing to urinate urgently (several times a night)
thrashing about while sleeping
grinding your teeth while sleeping

I strongly urge you to get a sleep study done. It is painless and only takes one evening to do. Sleep apnea deprives the brain and body of oxygen. The standard treatment for sleep apnea is that you get to sleep using a C-PAP or Bi-PAP machine. You wear a mask to bed and the machine pressurizes the oxygen flow while you sleep. No more snoring, sore throat, waking up multiple times, etc. etc. etc.

I have been using my machine for almost 3 years. Insurance paid for it & the sleep study. I have great energy now, feel more alert than ever. It did not take long to get used to the mask and I love the long term benefits.

If you snore, chances are you have some form of apnea. Get a sleep study done ASAP

Is an oxygen concentrator normal treatment for sleep apnea, and can oxygen cause headaches?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I’ve had several test where overnight I wore the thing on my finger to test my oxygen saturation levels, and apparently the levels went down because now the Dr. has ordered an oxygen concentrator to wear at night. We’re doing another oxygen level test in a few weeks, to see if the concentrator helps. I’m just wondering if this is a normal first step, because I see a lot of people on here use other things. I’ve also noticed that I’m waking up with horrible headeaches after sleeping with the oxygen, is that normal?
It’s just a normal concentrator with a humidifier bottle and nasal canula. I don’t think the headaches are from it being too tight, because it only goes over my ears and is just tight enough that it doesn’t fall off.

Usually when you get headaches it’s from lack of oxygen, I used to get those heaps but once i went on oxygen they cleared up straight away. If you think the prongs are too tight just hook them up underneath your nose and tighten at the back of your head, I do that because it feels like my ears are being pushed out the other way lol. As for the headaches, talk to your doctor and see what can be done, you may not be getting enough oxygen at night and might have to put it up higher.

How do you deal with insomnia?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I don’t want links to websites about insomnia or suggestions for different types of meds. I just want to know how other insomniacs like myself deal with it. How do you deal with your day at work/school? At the end of the day what do you do to help your body fall asleep?

If you have real insomnia you either don’t go to sleep at all or you go to sleep for only a few hours.

I went through a period of about three months where I didn’t and couldn’t sleep at all. I am a single mom of three kids, full time college student, and could barely function. I had a difficult time concentrating on anything.
A friend of mine gave me sleeping pills to try but that only put me to sleep for about 3 hours.

Then a nurse friend gave me B-12 and calcium to take.
Once I got started on that I was able to get more sleep.
Some other friends helped take care of my kids while I could sleep some. After about two weeks my life starting getting back to normal.

Does anyone have problems with the mask with CPAP for sleep apnea?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

My grandfather is finding it hard to breathe while wearing the mask that is on his CPAP machine. He has a mask and just the tube for the nose but both make him feel like he’s having a hard time breathing, and he’s worried about wearing it at night.

That usually happens for the first few weeks after getting the machine. After awhile he will get used to it. If not, then he should see a doctor because maybe the mask is not sized properly.
